Ran my first straight DM game today - Second Son

I ran the Second Son module written for the Dungeons & Dragons Experience as a preview module yesterday.  It was fun backing up and letting the players actually do everything without having to take a hand as a PC as well.

With Justin playing 2 characters, a Genasi Assault Swordmage and a Human Devoted Cleric, and Mathias playing a Dragonborn Dragon Sorcerer, we were a little short of the five characters that were recommended.  I kind of did what I could to make it a little bit more balanced.

Encounter 1:
     2 Hobgoblin Soldiers (lvl 3)
Actual: Just as suggested

Encounter 2:
     Hobgoblin Soldier (lvl 3)
     Hobgoblin Archer (lvl 3)
     Hobgoblin Warcaster (lvl 3)
Actual: Same monsters, but didn't recharge the Warcaster's abilities until he was bloodied.

Encounter 3:
     2 Skeleton Warriors (lvl 3)
     Blazing Skeleton (lvl 5)
Actual: Changed the skeletons for 8 minions with the same stat block, but only dealing 5dmg per hit.

Encounter 4:
     2 Chillborn Zombies
Actual: Skipped due to lack of time.

Encounter 5:
Kiet, the Shadar-Kai Chainfighter (lvl 6)
     2 Human Bandits
Actual: The bandits fled after seeing the Shadar-Kai hurt so badly, added in the big bad to truncate the next encounter into this one.

All in all, it was successful and we had fun.  We had the skill challenge, and they were pretty inventive in how they ran it.  I look forward to next week's session.  Maybe Chef Dan will be there this time, also.

I Told You the ShamWow Guy was Bad News

So apparently, the ShamWow Guy (Vince Shlomi, 44 years old) got arrested after soliciting, then battering a prostitute in his hotel room.  That's a felony, sir!  I guess I shouldn't be surprised after the wild success of his telemarketing products, he must be living like a rock star, and what rock star lifestyle would be complete withoug a felony or two?

Two observations about this:
1. I find it very creepy that a 44 year old guy was on tv with his headset and fauxhawk (it just isn't right).
2. I guess he took the SlapChop ad to another level... (rimshot)

A Little Freaked Out

I just did a search on a whim on Facebook for other people named David Gibb since I am friends with 3 other people who share my name.  Imagine my surprise when I hit Enter and saw the returned results to be 168; 106 were people with my name.

Freaky.

There are 24 people named Kelly Gibb, one being my wife, and 26 people named Jason Gibb, none of whom are my brother (he doesn't do the Facebook).

I knew Gibb wasn't a rare name, but Gibbs was always more common.  I guess there are more of me than I had figured...

St. Patty's Day

Kelly and I had to spend a little bit of this beautiful day together, so she took the day off of substitute teaching.  We went up to Ann Arbor to watch all of the drunk college students and have lunch.  I had thought we might go take a walk through the quad and hang out there, but we went to Main St. and took a little walk along its length before deciding to eat some tradition Irish fare: Mongolian BBQ.  What?  Not traditional enough?  We had corned beef and cabbage yesterday.

It was so great getting to sit outside and eat before coming back here.  Unfortunately, I don't get to spend the day outside, I have to run off to work in a few minutes, and I am sure it will be busy and exciting.  At least, I hope it will be since Wolfgang Puck is closed on Tuesdays...

Um, WHAT?!

MGM Detroit is for sale?  According to the Detroit News, it is.  MGM is trying to reduce debt, so they are putting the most profitable gaming house (Detroit, apparently) up for sale?

What will that mean for the employees?  When will we know any information?  I know that Treasure Island just recently sold, but I don't know any details about it.  I am just wondering what will happen in the near future and how I am going to be affected by this news.

I also hold out hope that this is a false report and we aren't being sold, but that is but a glimmer, and may only be an illusion.

How to Throw Cement

How to throw Cement

I saw this video on i-am-bored.com and I had to watch it twice.  I still have a hard time believing that these people are tossing this cement loaded shovel up ten or so feet.  How crazy is this video?

Had a Great Birthday

In spite of the poor weather conditions, it was a wonderful day to have a birthday.

I woke up, looked at the rain pouring down outside my window, and decided that waking up could wait a little while longer.  When I did get up, I was ravenously hungry.  Kelly and I went out to Three Brothers for Polish food (mmm, Pierogies...) where Kelly added the Bacon & Onion to her Pierogies, and there was about a pound of bacon and onion for 99 cents.  It was hilarious.  Also, Dill Pickle Soup is frightening.  It reminded me of cream of potato with chunks of pickle all the way through it.  Interesting, but not horrible.  I could only eat about 3 bites.

Next, we had a fun, fun time getting life insurance, starting a Roth IRA, and getting our financial future planned just a little bit.  Exciting, isn't it?

Then came the visitations.  First, Kelly and I went to visit my Papa and his kitties to see how they were doing.  We spent a few hours chatting and had a good time.  It was good to see him, we haven't gotten over there in a few months.  Next, we went to my brother's place and saw my sister-in-law Susie and my nephew, Alex.  He is getting big; he turns 2 at the end of March.  He wasn't too happy to see us at first (I admit, I do look pretty strange.)  After letting him knock me around for a little bit, he warmed up and we chased each other around the condo for an hour or so.  He wore me out!

Eventually, Kelly and I went to dinner.  We were planning on Red Lobster, but Benihana is more delicious, so we went there.  I splurged (since I was craving Lobster) and got the steak and lobster dinner.  The other people at the table were really nice, and the two right next to us were hard to decipher.  I couldn't tell if they were father and daughter, but that wasn't right...  They obviously weren't dating since they were at least 30 years apart and their manner was more of a father/daughter relationship, and a work trip seemed unlikely with only two of them.  It turns out, though, that they work at a nuclear power plant in Minnesota, and she is his mentor.  They were really nice, and made the night that much more interesting.

I was planning on having people over after I got home, but I had been out for 10 hours, and I was exhausted, so I had birthday cake (delicious) and went to bed.  Exciting birthday, no?  I really enjoyed being able to relax and spend time with family as well as the whole day with my lovely wife.  That was my favorite part of my birthday.

It's My Birthday!

You Know The Economy's Bad When...

You know the economy's bad when a plastic surgery office in Novi, Star Plastic Surgery has commercials offering a wonderful deal -- Buy one surgery, get one free.  I wish I were joking.  I guess even those who are able to afford plastic surgery are suffering.  It isn't clear if both surgeries have to be performed on one person, or if it can be boob jobs for two friends, but either way, it's pretty strange, in my opinion.

Also in this tough time, Compuware is laying off 250 of its 6,000 person workforce, and Kwame Kilpatrick, our esteemed ex-Thug, er, Mayor of Detroit just got a sweet job working for one of Compuware's subsitidaries.  Hmm, think they were in bed together?  I wonder how many of those people got laid off so they could pay Kwame his salary.

Taste of Spring

Or is it a tease?

I couldn't get over the good weather we had today.  Over 50 degrees before Valentine's Day?  Occasional blue skies?  Unheard of!  Kelly and I had our door wall open, and the kitties loved it.  Just the fact that there was fresh air in the apartment for the first time in a long time made a huge difference in the feel of the apartment.

I had the evening off, so Kelly and I went over to her dad's to help him out a little bit.  We saw Tina, when she was heading off to work.  In order to spend some time outdoors (and to make Kelly feel better) we took down the Christmas lights that were still on the trees, bushes, porch, and front of the house.  Then we took the fat dog Dixie for a long walk, after which she collapsed.  I went and got the converter box for Grandma Rembisz, so hopefully she will be able to get more than two channels, and then Kelly and I waited for her dad to get home to go to dinner.

We went to Buffalo Wild Wings for the best deal -- Free Wing Tuesday.  It was a very good night.  I just am very lucky to have Kelly to share these days with.

Elusive Rest

Why is it that everyone seems to be sleeping so poorly lately?

At work, people are having more of those work fever-dreams.  None of us can leave the evenings behind us.  I had one where I was pretty much paralyzed with my one table and had four other tables sat around me.  It was not pleasant, and I woke up feeling as if I had just closed my eyes.

That happened again last night.  I fell asleep on the couch, and I got in to bed at 3:30am, and woke up at 7am for church.  It was pretty bad, and it felt like every time I blinked or closed my eyes, that they were lined with sand.

If it were not for the little nap we got between the church and the birthday parties, I would not have been much use to anybody.

Did I mention birthday parties?  There were two birthday parties for one-year-olds today.  First was Hannah, Amanda's little one, and the other was Jack, Audra's little man.  Throughout the day/evening, we were surrounded by little kids and babies.  At the second party, I had a 7 week old Sophie in my arms, sleeping, and stealing my energy.  Finally when we got home, we zoned out on the couch watching the Grammys.

Quick note about the Grammys -- I never expected Robert Plant to win Album of the Year.  Well done!  Radiohead performed their 15 Steps with the USC Trojans marching band, and the little shout out to Bo Diddley by Keith Urban, John Mayer, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy were the highlights of the show to me.  Also, M.I.A. looked like she was ready to pop.

Coolest Little Bro Ever

Above pic links to Kevin's blog.

So, recently I found out that my little brother Kevo was artistic.  I never really knew this before.  In fact, when he started putting up some of his artwork on a Blogspot blog, I decided to migrate over from LiveJournal.  He has this crazy Jackson Pollock style that I really get in to.  His hip-hop series (Notorious B.I.G. and Method Man so far) were really cool and gritty, done in black and white with a removed tape/negative space technique.

I asked him to do a piece for me, the iconic Jethro Tull picture -- Ian Anderson standing on one leg with his flute -- which has been used for many years.  I left the rest to him, and lo and behold, this is the result.  Great use of many colors, reminiscent of tie-dye effects that make sense with the colorful past of Jethro Tull's music.

Thank you, Kevo.  You really are talented!

Superbowl Party Goodness

First off, the pic above is a link to my Picasa Web Album for the party.

Kelly and I had a couple people over to our place to watch a football game yesterday.  It was nothing special, unless you count the fact that 14 people fit into our living room to watch the Superbowl.  It was a good time, and accordingly, there are a few pictures.  Nothing too exciting.  Not much action on the living room floor as we all sat, talked, and absently watched the game and the commercials.

We had a good amount of junk food and drinks available, and I think the party was a success.  Definitely a fun time, one that we would like to repeat.

SlapChop - Friend or Foe?

I was alerted to this abomination, the SlapChop by Susie last night.  I saw the website in my IM window, and I had no idea what it might be.  Now granted, it looks helpful enough, being essentially a "Magic Bullet" chopper or "Vidalia King" or something like that.

But with a name like the SlapChop, I thought that it might be the special move of a particularly effeminate ninja.  "Don't make the Pink Ninja angry or he will SlapChop the shit out of you."

Did I mention that this product is being hawked not by the ever-shouting, bearded Billy Mayes,  but by the trash-talking, headset-wearing Shamwow guy.  Yeah, he is annoying enough to avoid any of the commercials all together.

2.5" Diameter Heart Attack

Oh. My. God.

Burnt Finger BBQ took the challenge of doing something barbeque style with bacon. This is called the Bacon Explosion. They did it in a fashion that would cause heart attacks in most of the population of Rhode Island. This monstrosity includes two pounds of bacon, two pounds of Italian sausage, and a jar each of barebque sauce and rub.

It is slow smoked before serving, and it looks completely sinful and I want to try it.

Obama Hennessey?!

I have seen many different bits of Obama merchandise so far.  I have seen multiple t-shirts with his face plastered all over, bumper stickers, keychains, handwarmers, Obama Bars soaps, and more, but this just takes the cake.

Hennessey decided to make a commemorative bottle congratulating the 44th president.  I just find it a little absurd that Hennessey is cashing in on the make-money-off-the-first-African-American-president scheme.  Seriously, stereotypical much?

I just think it a little over the top that there are Obama Chia Heads (both serious and happy styles), hats, Obama masks (in Japan), and so much more.  Yes, Barack Obama is our president, but there has never been so much swag and merchandising.  Is it smart to celebritize our president?  Should we be glorifying a man whose term in office is going to be the most difficult job in the world at one of the most turbulent times in our history?

Running Man

The glut of great 80s movies continues. I watched The Castle of Cagliostro and The Running Man in the past day and a half. Now, Cagliostro has great anime cred. Being a Lupin III movie that was penned by Hayao Miyazaki, it is the combination of two powerhouses. I mean, Monkey Punch's characters and Miyazaki's writing is awesome.

The Running Man, I am sure everyone my age will remember, is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's best films ever. I mean, any movie with Arnie's classic "I'll be back" being followed by Richard Dawson saying "Only in reruns" is a winner in my book.

It's closing in on 3am and my insomnia is wearing on me. I plan on being up for another few hours, unfortunately. Hopefully I can get something boring on tv or convince myself to fall asleep the old fashioned way.

I've seen 163 out of 239 films. That's a lot of films!

Supposedly, if you have seen more than 85 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 239 films on this list. Copy this list, go to your own facebook account, paste this as a note. Then, put x's next to the films you've seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun.

Post "I've seen ____ out of 239 films" as the title of the note.

So... Sleepy

Is anyone else in hibernation mode these days?

Kelly and I got our December DTE bill, and we think that $170 for a month in a 750 square foot apartment is pretty crazy. We have turned the heat down and have started living in blankets. We have no less than five in our living room (a 16' by 12' room).

In other news, my journal is now uploaded properly and migrated from LiveJournal. So, if you are bored enough, you may read about my exploits in Japan (end of May 2004 to September 2004) or before that if you want the slow, painful death of the relationship I had with my ex. That makes for some happy reading...

I played some Resistance 2 online today, and the full game is definitely as fun as the beta was. I was part of a coop team with 7 others running though Bryce Canyon, Utah. I was playing split screen, and my character of choice was the Medic. My team was well balanced, and we kicked the Chimera's butts all across the canyon. I passed the controller after that round, and they died within minutes. He blamed failure on the poor team dynamics. I think it failed because I was not playing.

In any case, I am just hanging out online while Kelly is watching the Screen Actor's Guild Award Ceremony. I am just surprised that people in Hollywood will join a guild called SAG.

Televisual Entertainment

So this is my new living room setup. My one wall is completely taken up with shiny new electronics, and I love it.

Featured:
  • Samsung 6 Series 52" LCD HD 1080i Television
  • Dish Network HD DVR Receiver
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Sony Playstation 3
  • Sony 900 Watt Receiver and Surround Sound System
  • Brand new tv stand
  • New Multimedia Shelves
I know that I have all of my speakers on the tv stand, and not surrounding me as surround sound is meant to be set up, but I have no room for the speakers behind the couch right now.

What economic downturn?

So Slow at Work

With Michigan's unemployment rating over 10.6%, and the rate increasing even though the pool of employable people shrinks means that we are in a world (or state) of trouble. And the first thing people cut out? That would be the luxuries. Don't get me wrong, we still have people coming in, and we really appreciate and take excellent care of them, but I want the masses to come in in droves, throwing wads of hundreds at us.

Well, that would be nice, anyway.

Kelly and I have been getting our living room remodeled (ie. giant tv) for Superbowl. We are having a few people over to gaze upon our 52" tv and eat snacks while watching people who are paid more than everyone in my family combined play a game. I will have a pic of the setup in my next post.

Journal Migration

Hey, how's it going?

This is the first post written in my very own blogspot journal. I am in the midst of migrating my LiveJournal account over here so I can have my blog-o-history (since 2002, intermittently updated).

I was inspired to do this because (a) Google owns it and (b) my little brother Kevo has a blog also.

Old posts will show up, but feel free to ignore them.

I write as if I have an audience; mainly it is for my own benefit, but, hey, I write to the amorphous internets.

Midnight Rambler

Okay, 2am rambler, but that doesn't have the same ring to it. I have noticed a few things as it comes to work. First, I am making more money than previous jobs, and that is to be expected since I moved from casual family-friendly dining to casino based, celebrity chef fine dining.  Second, there seems to be less drama than at other jobs.  I do not know whether it is because of the staff having to be more professional or just the hand-picked staff themselves, but despite the giggling of some and the frank discussions of others, there is no drama of note.  That makes me happy.  Third, I cannot get rid of work.  Over the past weekend, I worked quite a bit, even while asleep.  I keep having these fever-dreams of work where I am in the weeds, being triple sat with large parties who want impossible requests (I had one person order a bottle of Ambrosia, which, in a long string of Murphy's Law mishaps, was corked), and even when I shake myself awake at 4:30am, I remain disoriented.  I am told I am not the only one with these nocturnal hallucinations. Oh well, the perils of a new job, I suppose.  Other than that, it has been quite good. I want to take Kelly out to the restaurant or maybe to Bourbon Steak (possibly to both for a drink), but we can't yet.  At least, not until the Food & Beverage people figure things out and let us enter the casino on our off days... Oh well.

I propose a name change

I propose a name change.  Henceforth, Tuesday will now be known as Ramenday.  Andrew and I have been going out to lunch (since Tina and Kelly are picky eaters and would likely balk at the delicious ramen set in front of them) for the past few weeks, and I would love to continue the tradition. We go to Matsuchan Ramen in Canton, MI.  It is very authentic, with three people working.  One serving, one cooking, and one prepping.  It only seats about 25 people max, and has the authentic Japanese menu on the wall. Also, it tastes heavenly.  Whether it be the ShioRamen (clear soup), MisoRamen (Miso flavored soup), Katsu Curry (Fried pork cutlet and curry on rice), or whatever, this is one amazing ramen shop that I found almost in my back yard. Check it out, if you want some really tasty ramen.  Not the freeze-dried crap, but some real, delicious ramen here in Canton.

Erik and Lexie's Wedding

Erik and Lexie's Wedding 010

We went back to Delaware this weekend, for another wedding. This time, however, we flew. It was a fairly uneventful flight, but we got the car, and it had three seats too few. It was going to be a tight ride home.

I will skip most of the details and just hit the highlights.

The rehearsal went well, and we even made it there before the maid of honor (thanks to my leadfoot). The rehearsal dinner was pretty darn delicious. They even had a nice Valpolicella to drink in addition to my dearly beloved Yuengling beer.

We crashed at Lexie's, then when the girls left to get ready for the wedding, we went to A.J. and Debbie's place to get ready ourselves. It was strange being there without Kelly, since they are her aunt and uncle after all. We got to the hotel to check in and high tailed it to the ceremony. Once again, on time. I am starting to make a habit out of this!

There was a bit of time between the ceremony and reception, so we hit the lounge and had a pint of, what else, Yuengling. I wish this beer were distributed in Michigan. There was a cocktail hour with passed appetizers and drinks as well as other cheeses and veggies before we were allowed into the reception area that was (thankfully) at the hotel.

The revelry went late into the night, and at some point, became a blur. Safe to say we had a good time. I ended up falling asleep in one room while Kelly passed out in the other. I was awoken by Andrew Murawski (Tina's boyfriend) rolling over and putting his arm on me in his sleep. Apparently, we shared a king size bed, and he had to invade my space. Oh well, at least he kept his pants on.

The rest of the day was packing, finding multiple pairs of shoes that were not ours in our rooms, squeezing eight of us into a five seat Trailblazer (that the Alamo person promised would seat 7...), and driving from Wilmington back to Baltimore.

Upon arrival to the airport, we sat down to eat, and waited twenty minutes without even beverages. Deciding that we could not comfortably eat our meal and adjourn to the plane which would be leaving the ground in less than forty five minutes even if our food suddenly and miraculously materialized in front of our hungry faces, we left without a word. Sometimes, speed of service counts, and one of those times is at an airport restaurant.

The plane ride was nice, and we got home safely. A quick weekend, but filled with a lot of events.

By the way, the job is great, I will update on that later. My schedule quickly became overwhelming, and I ran out of time to write a review of my comings and goings. Please forgive me.
